Four students from Chandler-Gilbert Community College were honored for outstanding academic achievements and leadership at the 2017 All-Arizona Academic Recognition Ceremony.

The students – Yessica Avitia Santos, Danielle Jones, Adrian Ruiz and Rachel Torne – were named to the All-Arizona Academic Team. To be considered for the team, students must maintain grade point averages of 3.5 or higher, be working on an associate’s degree, demonstrate leadership, be involved in their communities as volunteers and participate in campus activities.

There are three All-Arizona Academic Teams – First, Second and Third, and making a team means winning a scholarship and a tuition waiver to one of Arizona’s state universities: Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University or University of Arizona. Students selected for the First Team receive a $1,000 scholarship, while Second Team students are awarded $750 scholarships, and Third Team members get $500 scholarships.

Scholarships and tuition waivers for All-Arizona Academic Team members are made possible by Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society of two-year colleges), the American Association of Community Colleges, Arizona Community Colleges, the Arizona Board of Regents and USA Today.

Avitia Santos and Torne made the Second Team. Avitia Santos plans to major in business and aspires to “become a CEO of an international company” while continuing to volunteer her time with organizations like StreetLight USA and Boys and Girls Clubs. Torne will major in early childhood education and special education, and wants to teach kindergarteners through third-graders or work with a program for early childhood autism.

Jones and Ruiz made the Third Team. Jones will work toward a degree in power plant engineering and says her “12-year commitment career goal” is to earn certification as a designated engineering representative through the Federal Aviation Administration. Ruiz plans to major in nursing and would ultimately like to be a nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and later continue his “service to the military and veteran community as a registered nurse at the Phoenix VA Healthcare System.”

All four students plan to transfer to Arizona State University.

The All-Arizona Academic Recognition Ceremony took place March 9th at the Hilton Phoenix/ Mesa Hotel. The four students from Chandler-Gilbert Community College were honored along with 22 students from other Maricopa County Community Colleges.

“Congratulations to Yessica, Danielle and Adrian and Rachel’s being named to the All-Arizona Academic Team,” said William Guerriero, interim president of Chandler-Gilbert Community College. “We commend you on your hard work and determination needed to receive this distinguished honor. We are honored to have you as part of the CGCC community and know you will go on to achieve great success in your academic and professional careers.”
