Jacob Slater, a 12-year-old member of the Chandler Gilbert Assassins Pop Warner team, has been selected as one of 35 football players and 35 cheerleaders in his grade from across the country as a Pop Warner All-American Scholar.

The designation puts Jacob among the top 2 percent of all Pop Warner participants around the country, a group of 6,119 students across 29 states, 73 leagues and 593 associations, according to Pop Warner.

Jacob’s mom, Emily, said the Pop Warner All-American Scholars program requires students have a minimum of 96 percent grade-point-average. Students are also chosen based on involvement and achievement in community and extra-curricular activities. The selection process begins at the association level then goes on to the west regional and then national level, she added.

“When Jacob found out that he was named to the First Team Pop Warner All-American Scholars he was very surprised,” Emily said. “It was not something he was expecting to win since it included kids all over the country.”

She also listed a few of Jacob’s most outstanding accomplishments, including his role as a running back, defensive back and kicker on his Pop Warner team and his membership in the CATS gifted program at Santan Elementary School in Chandler. Jacob is also president of his school’s community service club; and an active volunteer with his church, Dayspring United Methodist in Tempe.

He also took third place at the Hamilton High School Science and Engineering Fair and went on to present his project at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix. Jacob also won the Chandler American Legion Americanism Essay Contest during the 2015-2016 school year.

Jacob and all of the Pop Warner All-American Scholars will be honored at a banquet on May 26 in Philadelphia.

“We are extremely proud of Jacob for his work ethic and attitude,” Emily said. “He always gives 100 percent in everything that he does and is a great role model to his younger brothers and sister.”
