The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced over 3,200 National Merit Scholarship winners, including 20 Chandler students, on June 7.

National Merit Scholarships are funded by U.S. colleges and universities, and they provide winners with between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of study at the institution funding the scholarship. The scholarship winners are selected from the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. An additional announcement in July will bring the total number of college- sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients this year to over 4,000 students.

This year, 182 institutions awarded Merit Scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Merit Scholarships were awarded across the country from 103 private and 79 public institutions in 44 states and the District of Columbia.

The 2017 National Merit Scholarship competition included more than 1.6 million high school juniors enter from more than 22,000 schools across the country. This year’s student winners entered the competition when they took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Last fall, about 16,000 semifinalists were named.

To compete for the Merit Scholarship awards, semifinalists must advance to become finalists, and then submit additional requirements including a scholarship application, an essay and information about their extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions. Finalists must also have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed by an official from their high school and earn a score on the SAT that confirms the test performance in the PSAT/NMSQT.
