If their voice is their instrument and the idea of traveling to sing on stages near and far sounds fun to them, bring your kids down to audition for the Phoenix Children’s Chorus.

The chorus for boys and girls is having auditions at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 5 at Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. 3rd Street. Once selected, some members of the chorus will rehearse in a new space in the East Valley, at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler. Both boy and girl singers, who are going into grades second through eighth, can try out at the August 5 audition. Also, boys who will be in ninth through 12th grades may also audition on that date. The Phoenix Children’s Chorus’ East Valley choirs will rehearse at the community college every Thursday evening, beginning August 17.

Usually about 400 children and teens perform in the Phoenix Children’s Chorus with children from Phoenix and the West Valley rehearsing at the Phoenix Center for the Arts downtown. The whole chorus, which includes kids from across the Phoenix metro area, performs at venues around the Valley. They sing at several performances in the East Valley, including at Mesa Arts Center and Higley Center for the Performing Arts in Gilbert. The group has even sung “The Star Spangled Banner” at an Arizona Diamondbacks game in downtown Phoenix.

Singers learn the basic components of vocal technique, performance and musicianship. They participate in a summer music camp in Prescott, as well as weekly rehearsals and music literacy classes. Two advanced touring groups, the Concert Choir and Encore Choir, travel every summer outside of Arizona and the United States, and have visited New York City, Utah and Argentina.

Children do not need to have musical experience in order to join the choir. The chorus is looking for youths with pleasing, clear singing voices, who are able to match pitch and love singing. This musical education program instructs children in the fine art of choral music.

Any children who want to audition for the chorus can just show up at 9 a.m. on August 5 or if they wish, register online ahead of time at phoenixchildrenschorus.org/join/audition-information. Tuition is charged for participation in the chorus, but financial assistance is available.
