People can buy cookies, candy for various causes

The annual cookie walk and candy sale will be held at 9 a.m. today, Dec. 2, at Sun Lakes United Methodist Church, 9248 E. Riggs Road, just west of the Robson library

The cookie walk is an annual event and the proceeds go directly to the United Methodist Women missions. The local UMW missions serve, support, and pay for many grassroot efforts that benefit their communities.

UMW missions are around the world, from Antigua to Zimbabwe, and they support 121 programs in more than 100 countries.  Some of the programs involve feeding families, providing clean water, educating girls, treating diseases, intervening for migrant workers and providing support to end violence against women and girls.

UMW aims to improve the lives of women and children who, in turn, are empowered to make a positive impact in their communities.

The cookies and candy sold at the cookie walk and candy sale are homemade by the congregation members. Usually there are more than 10,000 cookies and the event lasts about an hour.

Attendees may purchase a carry-out box for $10 and fill it to the brim with holiday cookies, then stop by the candy shop for an assortment of favorite confections including fudge peanut brittle and other holiday treats.
