SciTech Festival celebrates exploration, invention

Every February, Chandler celebrates the exploration of science and invention as part of the statewide Arizona SciTech Festival. Various events take place throughout the state embracing science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

For the sixth straight year, Intel has graciously offered to be the main sponsor of the seventh Annual Chandler Science Spectacular, as we continue to provide hands-on activities related to science and technology. This free, family-friendly event offers us all an opportunity to explore the discoveries of science and technology in our own backyard.

The two-day Spectacular kicks off with the monthly Art Walk from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 in downtown Chandler. Local artists will showcase their creations, while sharing the science behind the processes.

The Chandler Science Spectacular runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 17, rain or shine, in downtown Chandler. It continues to grow with more participants providing interactive demonstrations. Residents will learn about rocket launching, forensics, robotics and electronics, just to name a few subjects.

New this year is a Science Event Competition for those participants who have already expressed their commitment. Categories include most educational, most creative and most passionate.

Six winning teams will be formally announced at a future Council meeting. A $500 award will be presented to their school’s science club. Orbital ATK is sponsoring the funding for this competition.

During my recent Chandler In Focus show, Renee Levin, Intel’s community affairs manager, and Trina Patterson, Orbital ATK senior director of communications, shared why STEAM education and supporting these types of events are so important to their companies.

Trina also shared her story about wanting to become a rocket scientist and how anyone can be anything they want to be. Watch our conversation on

I am very proud that Chandler continues to provide these unique learning experiences. It opens the doors for our youth to have brighter futures, knowing anything is possible.

The Chandler SciTech Festival would not be successful without the continued support and dedication from Intel, Orbital ATK, members of the Chandler Education Coalition, volunteers and all the participants at the event. Thank you for sharing the importance of STEAM education.
