News that a new office/retail/hotel development will be coming to downtown Chandler across from City Hall is exciting, but may require some changes in people’s parking habits.
This is because the vacant lot slated for developer Spike Lawrence’s New Square development has for years been used for overflow parking.
Fortunately, there is plenty of available parking in the downtown area, including a new 350-stall parking garage opening by the end of the summer.
The garage is located directly west of the La Stalla restaurant on West Buffalo Street, west of Arizona Avenue.
The garage is being constructed as part of the Overstreet project that will include a movie theater, restaurants and offices.
In addition, ground will be broken later this summer on a new 930-stall parking garage to be built behind the New Square development at Chicago and Oregon streets.
With the garages will come new directional signage planned to assist patrons in finding free parking at the new garages, plus the three garages east of Arizona Avenue.
The existing garages are located at:
• Chandler City Hall, enter off Washington Street, between Frye Road and Chicago Street
• Ports America, near Washington and Buffalo streets
• First Credit Union, near Washington and Boston streets
• Overstreet, coming late summer, at Oregon and Buffalo streets
Free parking is available 24 hours a day in the Chandler City Hall garage, except in spots marked as reserved. The new Overstreet garage will likewise provide free 24-hour parking. Free parking also is available at the Ports America and First Credit Union garages after 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and all day during the weekends.
