People can come to downtown Chandler to get fit and meet their neighbors during a free gathering for all ages.

Chandler Recreation is teaming up with fitness guru Lauren Zaslow Saks to offer a physical fitness series, FitDC.

Presented by Banner Health, the series blends group workouts outdoors with camaraderie at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park-Stage Plaza, 178 E. Commonwealth Ave.

The workouts will vary week to week and include Zumba, P90X, Insanity, Turbo Kick, Country Heat, HIGH, PiYo, POUND and Tabata Bootcamp.

“We feel those that come …will enjoy it because it’s free, they can come with their friends and family to work out, and it’s a great way to start a new fitness journey,” said city Special Events Coordinator Hermelinda Llamas.

“Also, it’s outdoors and there’s plenty of space for those who don’t want to work out to just hang out and watch and cheer those who are on,” she added. “It’s convenient for those who work and live in the area to walk to the park, work out and go home afterward. But above all, it will be fun, energetic and a big fitness party.”

The hourlong workouts will start at 6 p.m. Notable instructors – including Zaslow Saks, owner of Energized by Exercise with Lauren and creator of the FitPHX fitness series “Fall Into Fitness”– will teach the classes.

While it is hot outside, instructors will give “plenty of water breaks,” Llamas said.

“We are very aware of the temperatures and understand that exercising outside may be uncomfortable or difficult, but our instructors will be providing plenty of water breaks during the workout, encouraging everyone to go at their own pace. If needed, medical support will be called to assist those in need,” she said.

“Our hope is that folks will hydrate before, bring plenty of water with them to drink during their workout, utilize the shade when needed, and listen to their bodies as they workout to know when they need breaks.”

A warmup and cooldown session will be held at each gathering. The exercises include high-and low-intensity moves, cardio conditioning, kickboxing, dance and other types of activities.

“Chandler has always been a very health-conscious community, and the city continues to promote healthy lifestyle choices, activities and events,” Llamas said.

“This type of program falls right into our vision of providing the community with free family-friendly activities. It’s also a way to show the multi-use areas we have in Downtown Chandler.”

The fall series will be held every Thursday in September. The spring events will take place Thursdays starting Jan. 24 and ending March 14.

People are encouraged to bring lots of water with them and sweat towels. Registration takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the event site and all participants need to sign a waiver before starting.
