Bicycle enthusiasts in Chandler are receiving an early Christmas present.

The City of Chandler is teaming up with the Arizona Department of Transportation to construct new segments of bike lanes along McClintock Drive and Kyrene Road.

The two new segments will connect to the existing bike lane system at the Tempe city limits.

The McClintock Drive bike lane project begins just north of State Route 202 Loop Santan Freeway and extends to the Tempe/Chandler border just north of Ray Road.

The Kyrene Road portion of the project will merge into existing striped bike lanes just south of Chandler Boulevard. It will continue north to a tie in point approximately a half mile north of Ray Road.

Chandler officials want to hear public comments on the project by Nov. 5.

Construction is not expected to begin until sometime in 2021, but officials say that could be moved up to next summer funding is freed up earlier than expected.

Chandler officials said no new right-of-way, easements or temporary construction easements are anticipated.

Traffic restrictions are expected to be minimal during the eight-month construction timetable because most of the work will happen in the center of the roadway. Officials said at least one lane of traffic will always remain open in each direction.

The bike lane work won’t affect pedestrians on sidewalks.
