New museum store offers unique gift options

On Nov. 29, the new store at the Chandler Museum will participate in Museum Store Sunday by offering visitors a selection of quality gifts that organizers say are “filled with inspiration and educational value.”

Now in its fourth year, Museum Store Sunday is a signature initiative of museums and cultural institutions worldwide. More than 1,400 museum stores representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 22 countries, and five continents will offer inspired shopping choices.

The Chandler Museum Store, which held its grand opening earlier this month, features locally made art pieces that capture the culture and history of Chandler.

On Museum Store Sunday, shoppers get 10 percent off all purchases.

Additionally, local author Kathy Peach will do a reading at 1:30 p.m. of her children’s book, “The Tiniest Tumbleweed,” which can be purchased on site.

“This is our first year participating in Museum Store Sunday and we are looking forward to joining museums around the world in this effort to encourage shoppers to support their local museum stores,” said museum Director Jody Crago.

“This year it’s more important than ever to support local cultural institutions – many of which have been closed for months due to COVID-19 restrictions,” said Blue Anderson, president of the Museum Store Association board and director of visitor services for the Columbia River Maritime Museum.

“On Museum Store Sunday,” he said, “we encourage shoppers to ‘Be a Patron’ at their favorite museum stores; to not only find inspiring, creative and educational gifts for friends and family, but to also lend much needed support to these important venues.

“Museum Store Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for consumers around the world to shop local, support artisans and small suppliers, give back to the community and find unique gifts for loved ones.”

One of the unique displays in the Chandler Museum Store is the ostrich section, which gives a nod to the community’s ostrich history dating back more than 100 years.

Town founder Dr. A.J.  Chandler and others raised ostrich herds in Chandler for their feathers. Products in the store include ostrich themed socks, a coloring book with ostrich sketches, ostrich feather earrings and a spiral notebook with a historic photo of ostriches in Chandler.

The Museum Store is located in the lobby of the Chandler Museum at 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. It provides an additional interpretive space that enhances the stories told in the museum exhibitions.

Purchases in the Museum Store support the mission of the museum. The store is open during Museum hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The facility is closed on Mondays.
